A play on charged emotions generated through the juxtaposition of past and present.

The Changing Docklands

Applicable to so many modern cities, this is a portrayal of emotion and nostalgia. With its sense of power, it crosses the different eras and experiences of generations, where what has been defined as progress, in reality is sadness as life changes. What children see as history, their parents view with fond memories.

The defunct cranes at the side of the dock stand forlorn and forgotten, as do the unused railway lines that no longer carry goods to and from the ships that once lined the docks, echoed in the dull, ageing jetties and murky waters.

A broken mirror is viewed through the rusting hull of a ship from which the changing docks can be seen; against this background the bright colours of the new, green areas of landscape dramatically confront the old, an event to which we can all relate.
